Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the minister of
communication and culture has disclosed
that some members of the ruling All
Progressives Congress (APC) are under
investigation for corruption, The Guardian
reports.
Mohammed was reacting to allegations in
some quarters that the administration of
President Muhammadu Buhari was selective
in its war against corruption.
According to him, Buhari’s administration is
committed to fighting corruption to a
standstill and any Nigerian, irrespective of
tribe of party affiliation, found to have soiled
his hands with public fund would be brought
to book.
He said: “ A major fault which has been
exploited to weaken the anti-corruption
efforts is the ethno-religious consideration.
Instead of focusing on the social impact of
corruption, we are rather concerned about
the religious or ethnicity of those who are
being accused of corruption.
“This is ultimately counter-productive and
weakening the anti-corruption fight.”
Mohammed called on Nigerians to report any
known APC member involved in corruption to
enhance investigation and prosecution.
The minister noted that the citizens had a
role to play in the fight against corruption by
assisting the government achieve its goal in
bringing sanity to both public and private life
in the society.
He begged Nigerians to stop reading
undue ethno-religious meaning to those
currently undergoing investigation and
prosecution on corruption.
Mohammed added that his ministry would
embark on nationwide sensitisation of
Nigerians on corruption soon.
He stated that the enemies of the country
were already using media platform to
condemn Buhari’s anti-corruption war.
He, therefore, urged the media to support
Buhari’s administration eradicate corruption
so as to guarantee a better future for the
nation.
Yesterday, Mohammed revealed that
government officials looted N273.9bn from
pension funds between 2005 and 2011,
adding that corruption had under-developed
Nigeria and condemned the citizens into
perpetual poverty.
